APS Response to U.S. Withdrawal from Climate Agreement

June 2, 2017

Washington, D.C.—The American Physical Society is dismayed by the damaging decision of the Trump Administration to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement. That agreement was endorsed by nearly 200 countries as a means to address global climate change.

“The decision to withdraw is flawed. It ignores the overwhelming scientific evidence of the growing risks of global warming and the need for urgent action,” said APS President Laura Greene. “This decision limits the ability of the United States to take a leadership role in confronting climate change.”

Climate change poses the risk of significant environmental, social, and economic disruptions around the globe. APS has called for action to reduce the emissions, and ultimately the concentration, of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, steps that are advanced by the Paris Climate Agreement.
