DGRAV Student Travel Grants for APS April Meeting

Please help foster the future of this field by donating to the endowment campaign.

Support the DGRAV Student Travel Grants

The APS Division of Gravitational Physics (DGRAV) is raising funds to endow the DGRAV Student Travel Grants. First awarded in 1999, these grants provide needed travel support to allow DGRAV student members to present their work at the APS April Meeting. While the endowment goal has recently been reached, additional funds will allow DGRAV to award a larger number of Student Travel Grants allowing us to try and meet the demand.

Goal Reached!

About the Award

The amount of each DGRAV Student Travel Grant is approximately $300. All students who are members of the Division of Gravitational Physics and are giving talks or presenting posters at the APS April Meeting are eligible for the travel grant. Preference is given to applicants who have not received travel grant support in the past, but all participating DGRAV students are encouraged to submit applications.

Support for student travel has become one of DGRAV's core missions and accordingly consumes a major fraction of the DGRAV budget. As the field, the number of students in the field, and the importance of the APS April Meeting to the field have grown, so have the applications for travel grants.

For example, the number of applicants jumped from a previous record high of 22 in 2014 to 33 in 2015, and to a remarkable 59 in 2018. This level of demand cannot be sustained with operating funds, and as a consequence, DGRAV can no longer award travel grants to all of the qualified applicants. The purpose of the endowment is to provide funding for this activity at a level beyond that achievable now by DGRAV. Our goal for this campaign is to raise $75,000, enough to support 10 additional students each year.

"This was my first conference and was a fantastic experience. It was a great introduction to the processes of sharing my work and understanding the current research being done in the field. The DGRAV Student Travel Grant was instrumental in helping me attend. Travel can be fairly expensive, and with many people from my group going, my advisor couldn't cover all the costs. So the travel grant was a great resource to cover some of my expenses."

"The APS April Meeting is always an enjoyable experience. However, it is relatively expensive for a graduate student to attend. Thankfully, with the DGRAV Student Travel Grant to help with the expenses, I was fortunate enough to make it to this year's meeting in Ohio. It was a great opportunity to share my work with fellow attendees, hear about current research in my field, and to connect with collaborators (old and new)."

"I would have not been able to attend the APS April Meeting this year were it not for the DGRAV student travel grant. Attending the meeting allowed me to meet with both current and future collaborators, talk with undergraduate students from other universities, and most importantly give a talk on my current research. The money provided by the student travel grants allowed myself and other students from Montana to share our work with the communities in which we are a part, which is a very valuable experience, especially for students who are in the beginning stages of their research careers. Attending this conference was an invaluable experience and definitely helped solidify my research career."
